Herend is known for its long history of producing the finest hand-painted porcelain worldwide. Herend’s trademark fishnet pattern design, which is most popular in the U.S., originated in 1858 when an artist intrigued with a Chinese plate’s fish scale design painted it onto a rooster figurine’s breast to imitate feathers. Each Herend figurine is handmade in Hungary.
Almost as if silk ribbons have been spun together on a weaver’s loom, 35 different Herend patterns spanning the history of the manufactory rise up from a porcelain surface. A master painter has devoted 38 hours to lacing together the vast Herend catalog by embarking on a trip to the east to capture elements of Chinoiserie followed by a swing to England to make a deep curtsy to the Queen. An invitation to dine at the table of a famous banking family lures him back to the continent after which he finally returns to his own backyard where fruits and flowers beckon from Herend patterns new and old.
