Herend is known for its long history of producing the finest hand-painted porcelain worldwide. Herend’s trademark fishnet pattern design, which is most popular in the U.S., originated in 1858 when an artist intrigued with a Chinese plate’s fish scale design painted it onto a rooster figurine’s breast to imitate feathers. Each Herend figurine is handmade in Hungary.

Known as the Common Loon, this water bird defies his name even while out in nature due to his dramatic dagger-like bill, red eyes and his black and white, “tuxedoed” appearance. Now that the artists at Herend have immortalized him in porcelain, he is clearly far from ordinary. Common Loons are powerful, agile divers and only a bold pattern with large, vigorous strokes and striking scales of platinum and black could properly capture their commanding presence. These birds are famous for their eerie, beautiful calls with males creating their own signature yodel. No doubt this beauty will be so proud of his appearance that he will be yodeling extra “forte” today.
